Travel region SCHORFHEIDE – BARNIMER LAND

Culture, technology and lots of nature – from the Cistercian monastery to the ship lift

Only 50 km northeast of Berlin, the picturesque Finow Canal quietly runs through the rolling hills of the Barnim Land. Surrounded by the forest and lake-rich Schorfheide, the Barnimer Land – with its Barnim Nature Park in the center – is the ideal starting point for countless delightful excursions and discoveries. Find out more about the Niederfinow ship lift, the village of Chorin, the Chorin monastery, the Schorfheide, the Werbellinsee and so on… The Finow Canal begins in Liebenwalde and leads through twelve locks to the Oder-Havel Canal. A towpath leads past the former grounds of the Eberswalde State Horticultural Show directly to the gigantic Niederfinow ship lift. Here, a difference in altitude of 36 meters is overcome in just five minutes. The Cistercian monastery Chorin is located in the immediate vicinity. The monastery, which has only survived as a ruin, rises romantically in the middle of a wooded terminal moraine landscape and is one of the most beautiful architectural monuments of German brick Gothic. Every year the popular “Choriner Musik Sommer” takes place within its walls and attracts thousands of music enthusiasts with its classical concerts. The Barnimer Land also offers other delightful natural impressions. On warm summer days, the many lakes such as Liepnitzsee, Parsteiner See or Wandlitzsee are popular excursion destinations. The Werbellinsee, described by Fontane as a “fairy tale place”, is in a dreamy location near Schorfheide. The oak and pine-covered heathland of the former imperial hunting ground is best enjoyed as a hiker, cyclist or on a chariot ride.
