Setting a good example
Species and environmental protection also means taking a close look at your own business! Even if zoos play a very important role in terms of species protection, research and education, high energy consumption is questionable, especially with regard to their own standards. Eberswalde Zoo has been setting a good example for more than 20 years. The declared goal is energetic independence.
Innovative energy concept and sustainability
As early as 1998, the zoo was one of the first in Germany to be awarded the environmental prize for its innovative energy concept. Since 2010 it has been possible to heat the entire zoo without switching on electricity. This is ensured by our own local heating system using renewable energies and combined heat and power. A log gasifier with an output of 70 kW and a combined heat and power unit with a thermal output of 40 kW heat the 15 hectare zoo area with its approx. 1,500 animals. In extreme temperatures, two 150 kW pellet boilers ensure that no animal has to freeze. Wood pellets, which are pressed from wood residues in the Eberswalde pellet factory, serve as fuel.
Electromobility
The Eberswalde Zoo would also like to be a role model in the field of electromobility. The zoo’s commercial vehicles are being converted to electric vehicles, and seven electric vehicles are already in use at the zoo. Since 2016 there has been a charging station for all e-mobiles, i.e. cars, bicycles, pedelecs and Segways, right in front of the zoo’s main entrance. Partnerships are being considered between e-mobile car sharing companies and the Eberswalde Zoo in order to offer zoo visitors the most environmentally friendly travel possible.
