History

Wildlife park, animal park, animal park, zoological garden –
90 years seem to be just a very short moment.

Eberswalder waterfalls

The history of the current zoological garden in Eberswalde goes back to the year 1795. David Schickler created the waterfalls west of the Zainhammer in today’s Zoological garden. The forest area with its bridges, waterfalls, fountains, arbors and a grotto was a worthwhile excursion destination for nature enthusiasts.

Opening of the railway line

After the opening of the Berlin-Eberswalde railway line in 1842, the waterfall facilities were also easily accessible for Berliners. By the later royalMusic director Franz Mücke (1819–1863) the waterfall was selected in 1847 for “Das grosse Märkische Sängerfest” – a festival, which was to become a tradition in the following years. The “Mücke Memorial” was ceremoniously unveiled on June 28, 1863 and renewed in 1961 after war damage. During the redesign of the waterfall facilities between 1884 and 1886, the Eberswalder waterfall was given its own railway stop on August 3, 1884.

Wildlife Park

In 1929 the development of a zoo facility began. Bruno Schulz took over the waterfall restaurant as a tenant in 1929. As a passionate animal enthusiast, Schulz began to plan a spacious and, above all, high-quality excursion site with an adjoining small wildlife park. The first stocking comprised around 20 native wild animals.

Destruction and reconstruction

The life’s work of Bruno Schulz unfortunately came to a sad end on April 24, 1945 when the “waterfall park” was completely destroyed. Fleeing Waffen SS units ensured that only a small patch of scorched earth remained from the wildlife park and the restaurant.

The reconstruction of the waterfall park as part of the national reconstruction work was part of the second five-year plan of the former GDR up to 1960.

From pet park to zoo

I was the son,Günter Schulz, who in 1957took over the planning and later the design of a home animal park in Eberswalde. After only a year of construction, the first animal enclosures, the fencing of the site, the small ticket booth and the director’s house in the zoo were built.

Under his leadership, the park developed to a high-quality zoo that was unparalleled in the former GDR. Due to the successful keeping of lions, tigers, pumas, leopards, bears and later also monkeys, the former home animal park was renamed “Tierpark” Eberswalde and appointed to the “Commission of the Zoos of the GDR” of the Ministry of Culture.

New tasks such as environmental education and upbringing, species and nature conservation

Dr. Bernd Hensch entered the scene on September 19, 1981 after accomplishing his biology studies at Humboldt University Berlin. He started working as a scientific assistant at Eberswalde Zoo. In the following year he was appointed deputy director and in April 1989 director. In addition to the traditional zoo-relevant focal points such as the breeding and keeping of wild animals and domestic animals, new tasks such as environmental education and upbringing, species and nature conservation as well as biological research topics have now been added.

Metal fences, plastered facades and exposed concrete gradually disappeared and gave way to easily visible open spaces. Natural stone, oak and robinia wood were from now on used as building materials.

The aim was to create a zoologica garden that was as natural as possible, with pretty details and interesting animals from five continents.
